A wonderful performance about change

I was contacted by the contemporary dance groupNomo Dacoto help them out with their new piece Papiljong. It´s a playful performance for kids between the ages of three and six, exploring the magic of change and growth.

Together we went on an exciting exploration, finding and creating this imaginary world (or perhaps it was a living breathing creature?) that became the home of two characters so alike each other but yet completely different.

The show premiered in Umeå, Sweden on November 19th and will be going on tour in the near future.

Keelhaul th´ rat, Ye Scallywags!

Once again I was invited to the wonderful theatre stage of Teater Aftonstjärnan in Gothenburg. This time to create the set for Rebella´s Skatt; a pirate musical for children, also produced byRiskTeatern.

Growing more and more attached to this group, I was more than happy to set the 5 toys and 3 pirates in a playful  fantasy environment.

The show premiered on May 9th and was delightfully received by both kids and adults of all ages, including me.

Pictures coming soon. Meanwhile, have a look at these pics on Risk-Teatern.se

November 2010

Evening stars and Wild Parties.

It's been a while since my last true theatre set. This fall, I got the opportunity to go all out with minimal budget and create an intimate set at the wonderful theatre stage of Teater Aftonstjärnan in Gothenburg.

A fantastic musical called The Wild Party, written by Andrew Lippa, was produced by RiskTeatern and premiered on November 16th.

14 cast members and 5 musicians delivered a striking performance and made sure I had a great time creating their environment.

Pictures coming soon.

Perfection?

I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with Victoria Brattström and her wonderful cast in "Jag är Perfekt"

(I am perfect) at Pustervik theatre in Gothenburg.

They asked me to help with some additions to the set design. It turned out to be a lovely circus/theatre performance about societies call for perfection. They premiered in October and were called back to do two more shows in December.

Here's an entertaining video clip (in swedish) with two of the performers, Martin Nurmi (hoolahoops/musician) and Magnus Jakobsson (acrobat).

Also performing in the show were Marta Chaves (aerialist) and Johan Dahlkvist (musician and graphic designer).

Norrdans premiere

The premiere for the production …Lyckliga i alla sina dagar… by the Swedish contemporary dance company Norrdans is getting closer. On June 19th seven dancers, led by four choreographers, will take the stage for the premiere of the summer tour 2010.

It was earlier this year that I was contacted by Norrdans and asked to design the stage for this tour. It’s a simple concept and the process has been easy so far. As always I’m looking forward to see the end result.

The show will go on tour in Sweden and you can find more information on this website (in Swedish)

Premiere "I Denna Ljuva"

I’ve been working with the choreographer Marika Hedemyr

making a set design for her solo project "I Denna Ljuva" where she digs deep into her past and present experiences as a Swedish citizen and reflects over her Swedish culture.

In this performance there are discussions of what it means to represent a country and questions about how well one actually knows those selected show-and-tell artifacts one so proudly presents.

Do you dare to represent something without fully understanding its origin or the connotation it bears with it? Or do you dare to peek behind that filter of symbolism?

Foxes and coyotes in Spain

A fantastic collaboration has taken place this spring of 2010, one that I am extremely proud to be a part of.

The band Räfven from Gothenburg, Sweden, has teamed up with four dancers and created a fantastic storytelling street performance!

Using masks, costumes and loads of energy we tell the story of Cinderella, though in our own wicked way.

The premiere took place in Spain. On May 13th the mayhem began on the charming streets of Cartagena and a few minutes later it turned into complete and utter delight for the unexpected citizens waking up from their siesta. It’s a hit.

And now it’s coming to Sweden. Gothenburg will be the first lucky Scandinavian city to receive this extravaganza. On June 12th, come have a Cinderella’s ball at Musikens Hus! Räfven will entertain all day, for young and old, new and antique, in their surprising event Räfvarnas Afton #4. You can try not to dance but dearest... you won't succeed...

Hot Christmas Designs

I'm back in Spain and it greets me with smoldering hot weather and even hotter performances.

I'm here to work with the theatre company Ferroviaria on the production of Cuento de Navidad (A Christmas Carol by C. Dickens). The set designer is Angel Haro, a very gifted artist with many years of experience in the art industry and I have the privilege to be his assistant on this production.

Cuento de Navidad is a play for children; that is to say for people of all ages. It tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge who passes through life counting his money and ignoring everyone around him. When visited by three spirits, he is taken on a journey through his past, present and future; reliving, reconsidering and revising his life and the value of Christmas.

A Swedish welcome

Back in Sweden again and on my birthday I got another reason for celebrating. I have been rewarded for my work by receiving a grant from the Swedish memorial fund for Ingrid Thulin, renowned Hollywood actress from my home town.

I am humbled by their recognition as well as surprised and very grateful. Thank you everyone for your support!

March - May 09

To Cartagena (Spain) via Hong Kong.

After a successful three months in Singapore, this set designer makes her way to Spain for festivals, tapas and warm Mediterranean customs. A few days in Hong Kong was a wonderful way to cool off before heading to the warmer regions once more and now there's the great anticipation of new work for the festival Mucho Más Mayo.

Katrin has made her way to Singapore where she is working with choreographer Mr. Danny Tan for the 2009 DanzInc Festival. The production "White Shadow", a solo piece by Mr. Tan marking the 10th anniversary of Odyssey Dance Theatre, will be performed in the Gallery Theatre of the National Museum of Singapore on the 16th-17th of January.
